Halloween Lesson plans
Where's My Mummy?
By Carolyn Crimi
As one of our first Halloween books for toddlers, we read Where’s My Mummy? by Carolyn Crimi.
This is the story of Little Baby Mummy who’s not quite ready to go to bed. Instead, he plays a game of hide-and-seek with Mama Mummy. As he tries to find Mama Mummy, he encounters the clacks, flaps, and glugs from different Halloween creatures of the forest, but he’s not scared. That is, until he sees one frightening creature that spooks him away!
I love how this Halloween book shows how brave Little Baby Mummy is around the Halloween creatures, even while hearing all the spooky sounds of the forest. The ending is sweetly satisfying as Little Baby Mummy heads to bed after being comforted by his mama.
Questions:
- Raise your hand if you've ever played hide-and-seek?
- What sort of creature might be making the clinking and clanking noise?
- What kind of swamp creature could be making the glugging noise?
- What type of creature might be in the cave flapping?
- What could be making a scratching noise?
- (After reading) Let's see if we can list the creatures that Little Baby Mummy saw in order.
Room on the Broom
Halloween Books for Toddlers
We also read Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. In this book, a wild storm blows away some of the witch’s things as she flies on her broom. She meets some new friends along the way who help her find her things and get out of a fiery situation.
This story shows how kindness is contagious. The animals kindly return the witch’s things, and without hesitation, she lets them on her broom. In the end, these act of kindness build friendships that save the witch’s life.
Questions:
- Wailed means to cry loudly. Who can wail like the witch would?
- Who found her bow?
- The witch lets all of the animals on her broom. What does that show about her?
- How did the animal friends trick the dragon?
- If we are kind to others, they are kind in return. Can you think of some ways to be kind to others today?
Click, Clack, Boo!
By Doreen Cronin
We continued our Halloween books for toddlers with Click, Clack, Boo! A Tricky Treat by Doreen Cronin. I love all of Cronin’s farm books, so this was the perfect addition to our library.
In this book, Farmer Brown thinks that everything about Halloween is scary, especially all of the spooky sounds, so he just leaves a bowl of candy on his porch. Later, his candy bowl gets swiped and an invitation is left for…a barn party!
The onomatopoeia woven throughout this book makes it a delight to read aloud. Plus, this helps teach our little ones that noises are not scary.
Questions:
- Are you afraid of Halloween?
- Who do you think the dark creature beneath the trees is?
- How is Farmer Brown feeling? How can you tell from the illustration?
Ten Timid Ghosts
By Jennifer O'Connell
Ten Timid Ghosts by Jennifer O’Connell is the tale of a witch who moves into a house with ten timid ghosts. She uses different costumes to scare them out of the house so she can live there alone. Love the twist at the end!
And who doesn’t love a good counting book?
Questions:
- Does the witch want the ghosts to stay?
- Whose feet do you see dangling the bat down the stairs?
- What is the witch doing to get all of the ghosts out of the house?
- What did the ghosts do at the end of the story?
- Can you count with me up to 10? Can you count down from 10?
Big Pumpkin
By Erica Silverman
As our last Halloween book for toddlers or preschoolers, we read Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman. In this story, a witch plants a pumpkin seed to make some pumpkin pie, but the pumpkin grows too big for her to pick.
A ghost, a vampire, and a mummy come along who think they are big and strong enough to pick the pumpkin, but no one is able to get that big pumpkin off of the vine alone. That is, until bat flies up with a great idea to work as a team.
Not only does this book include many different Halloween characters, but it helps us teach how to deal with frustration and how to work as a team to accomplish big tasks.
Questions:
- What is the problem in the story?
- When we feel frustrated, what are some things we can do (besides kicking) to help ourselves feel better?
- What happened when everyone worked together as a team?
- Why does the witch say, "Drat," when it is time for everyone to go?
