Feed the Ocean Animals
Counting Ocean Sensory Bin
Why was the shark still hungry? Because he only ordered a small fry.
Not in this activity. In this one, every ocean animal gets fed (again and again) because toddlers simply cannot resist a sensory counting bin.
Kids draw a card with a crab, shark, whale, or octopus, then scoop up blue beads and fish to serve dinner. The tactile feel of the beads, the clinking scoop, and the thrill of filling tiny mouths keep little hands and minds fully engaged… long after you thought “just one turn” would be enough.
Materials:
- Feed the Ocean Animals Activity
- sensory bin
- blue beads or rice
- Optional: plastic fish beads
- 4 cups or containers
- scoops or spoons
Feed the Shark
Ocean Measurement Activity
Toddlers don’t just like feeding animals—they need it. Feeding hands them something rare: power, control, and the thrill of being in charge.
And that thrill is exactly what they’ll get while they feed the shark with this next ocean math activity.
Toddlers draw a card, link together the matching number of snap cubes, and search for a fish that’s the exact same length to feed to the hungry shark. In that moment, they are in charge of the shark, and that sense of power is what keeps them engaged and eager to try again.
Materials:
- Feed the Shark activity
- plastic tub or box
- colored paper
- snap cubes
Whale Counting Activity
Ocean Math Activities for Preschoolers
I tried whale-watching once, but my motion sickness had other plans for me. Whomp, whomp.
Luckily, we don’t need to venture into the queasy seas to practice counting with whales!
Your preschoolers can enjoy a hands-on, whale-counting activity in which they count the whale’s teeth in ten-frames and match the water spout to the correct number.
They can build number sense and one-to-one correspondence all from the comfort of dry land. No sea sickness for them!

Pufferfish Number Math
Ocean Math Activities
We’ve all been there – when the sensory overload hits, and one more little hand touches you, you might explode. Parents, preschool teachers… I get it. So do pufferfish.
When threatened, pufferfish puff up to 2–3 times their normal size. Can you imagine if humans did that? 😅
Luckily, this ocean math activity keeps little hands busy (and off you).
Preschoolers choose a pufferfish card featuring numerals, ten frames, counting fingers, or tally marks around its spines. Then they clip numbered clothespins to match, making their pufferfish extra spiky while building number recognition, counting skills, and one-to-one correspondence.
Busy hands. Focused minds. A calmer teacher.
Materials:
- Pin the Pufferfish Number Match
- clothepins (either write the numbers on or use stickers with Modge Podge)
Make 10 Turtles
Ocean Number Sense
It was a moment of pure awe. After searching several Hawaiian beaches, we spotted a crowd, which could only mean one thing. We raced down the sandy beach to watch, in wonder, as a mama turtle lay her eggs. Bucket list, check!
Inspired by that magical day, we brought the wonder of sea turtles into the classroom with a playful Make 10 Turtle activity.
Preschoolers count “eggs” (white pom-poms) and turtles, placing them on mats to make 10.
This hands-on activity mirrors the real-life miracle we witnessed on the beach, helping little learners build number sense, one-to-one correspondence, and early addition skills—all while celebrating the magic of ocean life.
