5 Christmas Books for Toddlers Jingling with Joy

25 days of books: this is a tradition I am going to start next year. Every day, the girls will open a book – some new, some old, and some borrowed from the library. Not only will they get to open a gift each day, but we will be building the Christmas spirit through literature. What more can a reading specialist ask for? So whether you are starting a new tradition or just sharing books with your class, here are some Christmas books for toddlers I’m sure you will enjoy reading with your little ones.

Dasher

By Matt Tavares

Dasher is a young reindeer with a wish for a different life: one where her hooves are in the snow instead of working hard in the circus with her family.

So Dasher bravely leaves her family to find something new and runs into Santa. And life for Dasher would never be the same.

Questions:

The Littlest Elf

By Brandi Dougherty

Oliver the elf could not figure out what his special job at the North Pole should be. He got lost in the toy shop and fell in the mixing machine, which left him feeling defeated.

But then, Oliver met the littlest reindeer, Dot.

Oliver and Dot made presents together for the elves and became friends. And then the best thing happened: Santa asked them to help and be his important helpers.

It is so important to empower our children at even the youngest age. Yes, there may be things that they can’t do yet, but they can still accomplish many things.

Questions:

Mr. Willowby's Christmas tree

Christmas Books for Toddlers

I know all preschool teachers can relate to this next Christmas book. We are constantly saving every piece of recycling to use in a project, even the stuff that my husband tries to throw away!

In Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree, a tree was delivered to Mr. Willowby, but the tree was too big! So they chopped the top off and gave it to the maid.

Again, it was too big! The top was chopped off and found by the gardener. The story continues in a cycle through various characters (bear, fox, rabbit) and ends with mouse where the tree was just the  right size.

Questions:

The Lost Gift: A Christmas Story

by Kallie George

In our next Christmas book for toddlers, four animals (bird, rabbit, deer, and squirrel) sit on a hill waiting and watching for Santa. Then suddenly, a present falls down from his sleigh.

The animals waited for Santa to return to pick up the lost gift, but he never comes. The animals went to get the gift and discovered a tag on it. Will they do the right thing?

Questions:

The Gingerbread Man

By Gail Yerrill

The Gingerbread Man is the classic story of a little old man and a little old lady living in a house, and the little old lady bakes a gingerbread man.

Suddenly, the gingerbread man ran out of the oven and the little old lady began chase, followed by the little old man, a pig, a cow, horse, and eventually a sly fox.

The fox offers help to cross the river and eats the gingerbread man with a “snap” and a “gobble, gobble”.
